Sam
Armstrong
I build research software for clinical AI: agent systems, self-service platforms, data workflows, and dependable interfaces.
C:\SAM> whoami
Builder of agent systems, research platforms, clinical-data tools, robots that can smell, and the occasional aggressively optimized PHP parser.
C:\SAM> _
Five projects that evolved one technical pattern: represent a human protocol as executable state.
Fasting Engine
An Umple finite-state-machine engine ran time-restricted-eating studies over SMS.
Tech & engineering:Umple · per-participant FSMs · scheduled transitions · SMS · audit logs.

FIRST-AUTHORED RESEARCH · DISSERTATION SYSTEM
AstralDeep
A secure sandbox for orchestrating medical AI agents, turning typed semantic primitives into interactive interfaces while preserving identity, delegation, and an audit trail.
Tech: MCP · A2A · OAuth 2.0 · typed SDUI
Smaller public projects where I test performance, computer vision, edge hardware, and systems techniques outside the main research platforms.

Research record
C:\SAM\CAREER.LOG
From data plumbing to platforms to agents.
-
Before Kentucky
Software engineering intern at Computer Services, Inc.; hobby bots, a small proof-of-work blockchain, then a B.S. in Computer Science from UK—Magna Cum Laude, University Honors.
-
Make the data move
Joined UK’s Institute for Biomedical Informatics and built the connective tissue for clinical studies: registries, lab review systems, imaging imports, network tooling, and research-data pipelines.
-
The master’s hinge
Defended “SmartState: A Protocol-Driven Human Interface.” The project turned a study-specific SMS engine into the first reusable platform in the record.
-
Tools other people can operate
CLASSify, LLM Factory, Forecaster, SpeakEZ, and a growing digital-pathology portfolio shifted the work from “I run this” to “here is a tool you can run.”
-
Technical lead, agents, and a thesis
Became CAAI’s technical lead, passed the CS depth exam in December 2025 and qualifying exam in April 2026, published AstralDeep at AMIA, and entered dissertation residency.
